The Context 19th Century America
America in the 19th century was experiencing her adolescence. Vast changes were occurring in industry and the economy. Westward migration, the California Gold Rush, the Mexican-American War, the Alamo, slavery and the Civil War, reconstruction, immigration, industrialization and urbanization all characterized this amazing era. It was an exciting time for the diverse citizens of the United States who ranged from mountain men and railroad builders to whalers and farmers. America was pushing forward into a new frontier.
