  • Did their surroundings provide inspiration for their work? How?
  • How would their work differ if they had been born/or worked elsewhere?
  • Why do you think so many artists are attracted to living/working in New Hampshire?

Lotte Jacobi’s photographic portraits of Francis Lederer, 1929 and Albert Einstein, 1938 both depict men in trance-like poses.

Both of these images record the appearance of a person. Ask your students to look carefully at these photographs and brainstorm words related to the images. Make two columns on a piece of paper, one column of words for each photograph. Words may be based on the person or subject, the medium, the pose, the setting or general observations. Are any of the words similar? What do the words describe?

Compare/contrast Edmund Tarbell’s painting, Mercie Cutting Flowers, 1912, with Daniel Chester French’s bronze relief sculpture, Jennie Delano, 1898.

  • What do these works tell us about the girls portrayed?
  • Are the girls the main subject or is something else? What else?
  • What role do the flowers play in each work?
  • What is similar about these works? Different?
  • Since color is not used in French’s work, what does he use to give definition to the images in his work?

  • What is the first thing you notice about the work of art?
  • What is the medium used?
  • How big is it?
  • What colors or shades are used?
  • Is the subject matter familiar to you? What or who is it? Where is it?
  • Is it decorative and ornate or plain and simple?
  • Can you think of other works that look similar to this one? Give examples.
  • How do you feel when you look at this object?
  • If you look at the work of art and then close your eyes, what details stand out in your mind?
  • Does the object or painting tell you a story? What type of story?
